Is Anastasia makeup vegan? No, not all ABH products are vegan as some of the brand’s makeup range contain ingredients derived from animals or animal by-products, and some of their makeup brushes are made with animal hair which means they are not vegan.
The cosmetic industry produces thousands of products. While these products are intended to make us feel good and boost our confidence, there is a lot of pain and suffering caused by the industry. People are often unaware that many of the products they know and love contain ingredients that were taken from animals.
Anastasia Beverly Hills does not test their products on animals which makes them “cruelty-free”, however, they are not vegan.
A vegan product is one that contains no animal products or substances that are derived from animals. Most people think of food when the word vegan is mentioned. Animal products can be found in many types of goods besides food.
This is especially true for makeup and other cosmetics. When you look at the ingredient list for your cosmetics, you will likely find items that are not only hard to pronounce but also hard to identify as an animal or non-animal product. While it is becoming more common to see companies using labels to identify vegan products, you may need to do a little research yourself.
The short answer to this question is no. A product labeled as vegan does not necessarily mean that it is cruelty-free. Why is that? While vegan refers to the ingredients or materials used to make a product, cruelty-free typically refers to the testing process. For example, a mascara that is labeled as vegan may contain no animal-derived ingredients but was tested on rabbits in a lab before it is sold.
For the cosmetics industry, testing is an important part of the process to ensure that companies are not releasing products to the public that could be harmful. Unfortunately, testing on animals is still a common practice in many parts of the world, even when alternative methods of testing are available and more reliable.
The best option is to find cosmetic products that are both vegan and cruelty-free. This will ensure that it doesn’t contain animal products and wasn’t tested on animals.
No, some of ABH makeup brushes contain animal hair which means they are not vegan.
There are hundreds of animal-derived ingredients that are used in products all over the world. Many of these make their way into cosmetic products. Here are some examples of common ingredients to watch out for:
Common Use: Lanolin is an emollient used to soften and moisten the skin. It is most commonly found in lip products, creams and moisturizers, and hair products.
Source: Lanolin is derived from sheep’s wool.
Common Use: Collagen is primarily used for anti-aging skin products.
Source: Collagen is a protein that is derived from the tissue, bone, ligaments, and skin of animals.
Common Use: Keratin is used in products to strengthen hair and nails.
Source: Keratin comes from the hair and horns of animals.
Common Use: Musk is used as a fragrance for some perfumes and other products.
Source: Although found in a handful of other animals, musk is most commonly taken from musk deer.
Common Use: Used to make nail and other makeup products sparkly.
Source: Guanine is created from scaping scales off dead fish.
Common Use: An anti-aging chemical used in lip balms, deodorant, and moisturizers.
Source: There are some natural sources such as olives, but can also be extracted from shark liver oil.
No, Anastasia products do not contain musk.
Many animal-derived substances are produced using extremely harsh methods. A disturbing example is musk. Musk is a fragrance that is most commonly extracted from Himalayan Musk Deer located in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Burma (Myanmar). The musk is produced by a “musk sack” located near the deer’s genitals.
There are two ways that musk is extracted. First, musk sacks can be cut off a dead musk deer. This has led to many musk producing animals to become endangered. The alternative method is to restrain the live deer and insert a metal tool into the small opening on the musk sack. The tool is then used to scrape the contents out of the sack. While this does not kill the deer, it is extremely painful and terrifying.
Anastasia Beverly Hills contain the following animal-derived ingredients/materials:
With the hundreds of animal species that are used in the production of cosmetics, it seems that no type of animal is safe. A wide variety of animals including mammals, fish, birds, and insects create substances that are coveted by the cosmetic industry.
Also, hundreds of thousands of animals are used to test cosmetic products each year. The most common animals used in the testing process are mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and dogs.
Is Anastasia Beverly Hills vegan? No, but fortunately we’ve sorted the Anastasia Beverly Hills range of makeup and makeup brushes into lists of vegan and non-vegan. To search for the product you are after, hit Command, then F to search the page for either products or ingredients.
Please check on the ABH website as well as the product packaging for the full list of ingredients before purchasing as they are subject to change.

The list below is not exhaustive, however, we have done our best to include many of the common cosmetic ingredients derived from animals. Most of them have plant-derived alternatives which means that a product that contains a certain ingredient may or may not be vegan.
To find out whether the product you are interested in has an ingredient that comes from a plant, animal, or synthetic origin, it is always best to contact the brand/manufacturer directly.
The most significant thing that you can do is to stop purchasing cosmetics or makeup that contains animal products. Fortunately, this is becoming easier to do. More and more companies are finding alternatives and making an effort to properly label their products as vegan.
First, check out the label and look for markings that will indicate the product is vegan. If the product isn’t clearly labeled, you may need to do a little research by inspecting the ingredient list. Keep in mind that many ingredients can be sourced from non-animal sources. When in doubt, do without, or choose an alternative product.
